1、The present study aims primarily tO reveal the washback effects of the Test forEnglish Majors Grade 4 and Grade 8(TEM4&8).In the investigation,a number ofresearch methods such as questionnaire surveys,interviews,classroo
2、m observationsare adopted to see how the tests affect the actual teaching and learning practice. The results indicate that the TEM tests have,generally speaking,brought aboutlargely positive washbaek on the education
3、 of English majors and discouragedteaching and learning to the tests ever since their inceptions rnore than 17 years ago.For example,in the questionnaire surveys,the teachers respond that the TEM testshave moderate influ
4、ence on their daily teaching.Most agree that the present allocationof marks and weighting to each of the components in the tests are reasonable,that thetests have beneficial washback effect 0n the improvement of teaching
5、,and that thereis a close relationship between the daily classroom teaching activities and the testingactivities. Most students also respond positively to the usefulness of the tests as a means toimprove their langua
6、ge proficiency and indicate that they do not take the tests simplyin order to win a diploma or to have a certificate that will help them find a job.As thestudents progress into the advanced stage,the instrumental motivat
7、ion to learningtakes precedence and a great majority of the students(91.1%)regard passing theTEM8 as an advantage,while at the sa/-fle time they approve of the test aS-a means toimprove and measure their language profici
8、ency. The secondary purpose of the study is to collect information about the specificdifficulties the students encounter in each test component SO that the implications forteaching and instructional planning can be o
9、btained.With this in mind,somequestions are incorporated into the two questionnaires for students.The students’responses indicate that they find the basic skills of lfstening,spelling,the size ofvocabulary,knowledge of g
10、rammar,usage,collocation。And the relevant culturalbackground to be the areas that need improving and call for additional training andpractice. The implications for teaching are that laying a good foundation in the ba
11、sic skillsand knowledge of the language and culture should be emphasized in the dailyteacbSng activities and imstructional planning.Due to the limitat、ion of class hours and course schedules,autonomous and independent le
